[LPL Board of Directors] MOTION FROM THE CHAIR - Fundraiser position
Adrien Monteleone

Thank you Reed,
Vote received.
I will however take the liberty to address your concerns:
I understand fully the desire to meet Vinson before approving a contract with
him. It is for this reason, I wanted to handle this at the January meeting and
have him attend. I had no intention of pushing this to be signed and completed
before the April meeting, nor was I expecting the Board to approve a contract
that doesn't exist yet. I was asking for support and approval to negotiate and
offer the contract, but the Board would still have to approve it. We conducted
a similar process with Wendy.
Perhaps my choice of using the language "and offer" should be amended out to
make it clear that no signatures would be applied until the Board approves the
terms.
If you submitted such as a motion to amend, I'm sure that amendment would pass
and we could then consider the amended proposal.
The question of why paying someone to raise funds I thought I had already
addressed, but the simple fact, other than his previous ability and
experience, is that he could do so full time. None of us have that
availability. Thus the potential to raise more funds is available. We could
ask the same questions for each task the Executive Director does. Why pay her
to do them, when we can do them for free? The simple answer is not even all of
us put together can consistently manage the time to complete the tasks she is
performing working full time on them.
To be sure, Wendy is not comfortable asking for money. She has made that
clear. But she is doing it anyway as you mentioned. But, I think it a much
more positive and productive situation to employ the principle of "division of
labor," as it is called in economic circles, where she carries out the tasks
she is best doing, and someone else carries out the tasks they are better
suited to - namely fundraising. She is already employing this with organizing
the parishes in a different task — the organizers she has found, for the most
part, but not all, are unwilling to make phone calls to get anyone to attend
the caucuses. They seem to be willing to do any other leg work, but not that
crucial part. So she has decided to handle that on her own, becuase she is
good at it and knows it has to be done for the event to be a success. Everyone
has their strengths and their roles. If we can find someone who is capable and
willing to perform a function we need, that she is not experienced in or very
good doing, and it would save us the burden of having to do so, and that would
allow us to focus on our other responsibilities instead of having to perform
it ourselves, then I see no reason not to attempt to do so.
In conclusion, I am open to the above amendment if you wish to propose it, and
I certainly agree with waiting till the April meeting to formally approve the
contract and offer it to Mr. Mouser, after everyone has had a chance to meet
him as we did with Wendy.
This will give us some time to conduct a proper negotiation, and to take
account of our own efforts and abilities as volunteer part time fundraisers.
