Already done, partly. I'll do some more tonight in prep for all the parishes
about to organize.
I've already created subdomains for each parish and pointed them to a folder
inside /about/parishes/
I'm not sure exactly how we'll set it up, but I want each parish to be able to
go straight there by using for example:
orleans.lplouisiana.org
They get sent to the "home page" for the "Libertarian Party of Orleans Parish"
which will have sub pages, but it may just be a small portion of our larger site.
I don't think we'll need separate Drupal installs for each parish as that
might be quite a mess and we don't want to make people have separate logins
for the state and parish sections. Ideally, we should keep it under one
install for CiviCRM purposes because we need everything kept together there as
well. Everything should be all in the main site and those subdomains just go
to a handful of specific parish pages.
Now, all of that out of the way, I've started to create a standardized system
like so:
office at subdomain.lplouisiana.org
To start, we'll have seven emails for each parish as follows:
sccrep
chair
secretary
treasurer
liaison
campus
membership
Then according to the size of each PEC, for those not in an office, we'll have:
districtN-Z
atlargeN-Z
According to if they elect by district or at large. We don't necessarily
start N at "1" because the officers are actually either at-large or district
members. A little messy, but not so bad because these won't be assigned until
we know what was elected at the caucus and the PEC's first meeting.
As well, each parish will have two mailing lists for communications.
One for the PEC: pec at subdomain.lplouisiana.org
One for member announcements: news at subdomain.lplouisiana.org
But that's all after a PEC is formed. Of course, right now, I can also create:
organizer at subdomain.lplouisiana.org
for each parish and get them the info to use it.
Take a look at the three web interfaces and tell me which one you think you
like the best. Squirrel is fastest, but I think people will like using
RoundCube more. Horde has the most features, but is quite 1995ish. The
reason I ask is because I think we should simply set one system for auto-load
so as not to confuse or confound anyone. I have noticed this is a problem for
some of us that are less tech savvy already. Using one system will also cut
down on any "help desk" questions we'll have to field as people learn to use
the system. Ideally of course, I wish more people would use stand alone
clients instead of webmail, but I know that's asking too much. The one thing
I want to strongly discourage is forwarding. The two main reasons are doing
so means there's no permanent record of the full conversation on our server,
and second, replies don't look like they are coming from the same person the
mail was sent to, and it won't look like its coming from the LPL.
I'll go ahead and set up these organizer addresses right now and report back
when they are done.
I made up a "new user guide" for the email system with screen shots. I will
remove the other two interfaces we don't choose and have that as a template to
send to people as we bring them online.
Don't sweat Drupal yet but feel free to keep learning about it
I think I want to continue my original plan:
Build out the current site to the current outline and plan
Create the new content types in Drupal that will be needed to better handle
the more complex views and pages.
Port everything over to Drupal
Try to copy the CSS styling over in a customized template so the two sites
look similar. (I can't find a single Drupal template I like)
Somewhere in between all that, I'll install CiviCRM so Howard can get crackin'
on writing the import scripts for our various data sources. (LNC Dump, SoS
voter list, Piryx donation records, etc.) It doesn't have to look pretty and
the site doesn't have to be finished for him to start that work or for us to
even use CiviCRM and get our feet wet on it.
