Thanks for looking into that Howard.
I think we wanted something nicer to start off with, but cost is a big
consideration.
I was expecting we'd have to order cards once per month, or once per quarter
to keep shipping down or qualify for free shipping. Or, we could order several
blank cards in advance and use a letter press machine to personalize them.
I don't think we need to issue new cards each year. We can put a "member
since" date on the cards and each card can have a member #. If ever we need
to verify their current status, we just look them up. As it is, the only
times anyone really needs a "valid" card would be conventions and biennial
caucuses, so far. We should have a list of attendees in advance anyway. I
don't think this will be a problem.
I have a bunch of links for several card companies at work and will send them
to you when I get there. I think the costs were about the same or better than
what you described below. The only question would be quantity needed to get
that price.
I think the way they generally work is we pick a design and then upload a list
of names, they produce the cards, and then send them to us.
Of course, if we end up needing any of our own equipment, I think the LPL can
afford that price with no problem. But feel free to make a donation to cover
it if you like.
10,000 members is a long ways off. Remember, we're just issuing these to
people who pay annually. I don't think we'll reasonably hit that number in
the next 10 years. I hope to be wrong though. That would be a great problem
to have. (I think even national has only 13,000 dues paying members)
